The Criss-Cross

A classic exercise from the abdominal series, the criss cross really works all the layers of the abdominals. A common mistake you see with the criss cross is reaching the elbow to the knee and over turning the head, straining the neck. The oblique line is more fine - think of reaching middle of your ribs to the bent leg. Don't pull on your head, but rather almost think of your head falling back into your hands.

Keep your elbows open, but still in line with your vision, if you pull the elbows too far behind you then the upper neck muscles get over worked.

Louise Taube Pilates

Hi, I'm Louise Taube. I am a pilates instructor based in Melbourne Australia.

My first post was of Joseph Pilates the man himself doing arm circles!

This is a little clip I made in my pilates studio, exercising on three different pieces of pilates equipment - the Reformer Bed, the Cadillic, and the Wunder Chair. It was fun to do, and took an afternoon to film and another afternoon to edit.

An on line magazine call Pilates-Pro has recently published an article on me and features the clip! www.pilates-pro.com

Joseph Pilates

This is a very short film clip of Joseph Pilates doing arm circles with stretch cords.

If he was one of my current clients I would cue him to connect through his ribs more as they are really flaring a lot! Then he does connect his ribs but a little too much, protracting his shoulders and flexing his spine.

I love how he is wearing his little high waisted shorts - a signature statement. He believed that the less clothes you wore the better - something about letting the skin breath and thus not harboring bacteria. ewwwue!!!

I also love his hair do - very cool.

Mostly what I love about this film clip is that you get to see Joseph Pilates in a action - demonstrating just one of his many exercises. This is the actual man that has revolutionized exercise as we know it today. He was so far ahead of his time that we are still using his exercise inventions today - in health clubs, physiotherapy clinics and of course pilates studios!!!
